Home to both The Hanger Theatre Company as well as The Kitchen Theatre, Ithaca is a gorgeous city (pun intended) in the heart of the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. Though hit hard in the winter time, this vibrant community, couched between Ithaca College and Cornell University, is a liberal haven filled with bookstores, coffee shops, excellent restaurants and bars for those stay-inside months. However, if you are lucky enough to visit in the spring, summer, or fall, you'll be treated to a stunning landscape of hilly ranges and pristine lakes. Finger Lakes Wine Country is also right in your back yard....just sayin'.

FOOD:

The Rook

The Rook came highly recommended to us by Benno Ressa, the Company Management Fellow at The Hanger in 2018, and my God did it live up to expectations. This ambiantly lit, golden gem located directly across the street from The Kitchen Theatre and close to The Hanger is open late and serves food all the way till the end on its Late Night Menu that includes their superb Duck Fat Fried Chicken ($15) and their Gandolfini Fries with capocollo pepperonchini, mozzarella, and herb salt ($9.) However, the other star of this special place is their carefully curated cocktail menu. At affordable prices ($8-$10), these cocktails are perfectly balanced and made with care every time, and on Tiki Tuesdays, the cocktail menu expands to include five additional creations like their specialty Mai Tai and a creation called Tiki-ferrari-a-groni made with El Dorado 8-yr rum, Fernet Branca, Campari, Carpano Antica, and Capa del Veccio amaro.

Liquid State Brewery/ Shuck Yeah Foodtruck

To begin with, I cannot say enough good things about Liquid State Brewery. This brand spanking new local brewery is located down the street from The Kitchen Theatre and not far from The Hanger, and should become one of your favorites. With absolutely delicious beers like their La Trapeze Belgian-Style Dubbel (a dark brown beer with caramel and plum notes), their Hatchback Double IPA brewed with mineral salt and coriander, and their Local Vibe No. 2 made with local white cone hops and local hops to create a citrusy pale ale. All their beers are made with the upmost care and a fair deal of adventure and creation. I recommend (as ever) a flight so you can sample and find your favorite. Enjoy your beer inside their large, industrial-style indoor space complete with board games and skee ball or outback on their deck where you might be lucky enough to have Shuck Yeah Foodtruck available. This incredible food truck, with roots in Massachusetts, has a select menu of sustainable ingredients as well as locally sourced beef. I highly recommend their Fish Tacos, their Grilled Shrimp, and here's something- their fries are utterly and completely perfect.

Ithaca Farmers' Market

Picture
When Craig Wesley Divino first recommended Ithaca Farmers' Market to me, I thought- sure, I'm sure it's wonderful, but I've seen many a good farmers' market in my day. However, this farmers' market is in a league of its own. The tremendous collection stalls are located inside a gorgeous, wood-planked, covered complex, complete with strung lights and riverside views. Surprise, surprise, but the farms of upstate New York produce a wide variety of incredible products like local honey, maple syrup, wine, root vegetables, mushrooms, flowers, as well as meat. All of this is in addition to the incredible variety of lunch options from crepes to Cuban fare to Laotian food to artisanal pizza. Come with an appetite, and snack while you shop. This is a food lover's dream, and will demand a few visits in order to purchase and taste everything you should.

Buffalo Street Books

Buffalo Street Books is Ithaca's community-owned cooperative bookstore. In 2011, the community raised enough money to save the bookstore from closing, and it has remained a literary haven in downtown Ithaca ever since. Small, handwritten recommendations litter the shelves, recommending and describing books for each person's particular needs or desires. With adorable armchairs scattered throughout, this is a welcoming spot to sit and stay awhile and bring the whole family- their kids section is large and utterly charming.

WINERIES:

Picture
The Finger Lakes wine region is only possible because of the Finger Lakes themselves. All wineries in the region are nestled up against these lakes (most especially Cayuga, Seneca, and Keuka.) The lakes provide warmth in the winter and a cooling effect in the summertime, which allows grapes to grow well in this unique climate. Though there are multiple varietals cultivated in the region, Riesling is king here. The region's most renowned wineries like Wiemer and Dr. Konstantin Frank have experimented and cultivated the Riesling gapes in this region to such a degree that they are now, arguably, the finest Rieslings in the nation. In recent years Cab Francs have risen in popularity, due to their heartiness, and I even found some excellent port in my travels.

Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard

Craig Wesley Divino gets another shout out here for bringing me to this beautiful place. Hermann J. Wiemer is probably the most nationally acclaimed winery of The Finger Lakes region and for good reason. Nestled in a green, lush landscape, this winery's elegant, refined tasting room in a converted barn is filled with passionate, knowledgable staff who are thrilled to share what this special place has to offer. The rieslings they craft here are arguably the best in the U.S., and even if you don't consider yourself the biggest fan of that varietal, be prepared for subtle, delicious, complex wines that you are sure to appreciate. With tasting flights that range from $5-$6, sample all the rieslings this vineyard has to offer from their dry to their semi-dry to their late harvest to their Riesling Magdalena (one of my personal favorites.) With red varietals, other whites, and brut wines available as well, bring friends and sample from all that this special vineyard has to offer.

Bloomer Creek

Started 30 years ago by a husband and wife team, Bloomer Creek has risen to national acclaim due to their innovation, their sublime experimentation, and their dedication to Old World harvesting techniques including hand harvesting and de-stemming at various stages of ripeness and embracing  botrytis ("noble rot") on there vines rather than preventing it. Their Tanzen Dame Rieslings have been embraced by wine lovers. Homages to the great wines of Germany, Austria, and the Alsace, the Tanzen Dame Rieslings and Gewürztraminer are exceptional examples of subtle, careful wine crafting. Their White Horse red is also a national favorite. Similar to the reds of Loire, this spicy blend of Cab Franc and Merlot is strong and delicious. Their Edelzwicker wines have also been featured in The NY Times. A blend of Riesling, Gewürztraminer, the Finger Lakes own grape – Cayuga White, as well as other white varietals, the Edelzwicker is also made in the tradition of the Alsace and captures the bright vivacity of grapes in this region are capable of. They usually have one select tasting available for $6. Served in an old, beautiful, homey farmhouse, you will most likely find one or two of the owners at their long tasting table in front of windows overlooking fields and Lake Seneca. These wine makers are very very proud of what they do and even prouder to share their harvest with you.

Randolph O'Neill Vineyard

Picture
Randolph O'Neill Vineyard first came on my radar at a wine store in Ithaca where it came highly recommended from the staff. This brand spanking new vineyard is making a stir due to their small batch, elegantly drinkable wines. With only a Riesling, a dry Rose, and a Cab Franc currently available, swing by their tasting room for the wine. You might almost miss the turn off, but don't be put off when you drive down a small gravel road next to what is clearly someone's home. With a tasting room set up in a garage, treat yourself to a no frills tasting experience that is sure to spoil you for what The Finger Lake's Region is capable of producing. These wines are top to bottom glorious and ten years from now when ROV has a fancy tasting room with lake views all set up, you'll be able to say- I remember when they started in a back garage.....

Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery

Picture
Dr. Konstantin Frank is the father of wine in the Finger Lakes Region. A Urkanian Immigrant, Frank's headstrong belief in the possibility of grape growing in and around the Finger Lakes took years of blood, sweat, and tears, but eventually produced a world class Riesling  in 1962 that put this wine region on the map. His son and heir, Willy Frank, continued in his father's footsteps by introducing world class sparkling wine to this region as well in the 1980's. Although this vineyard is a bit of a drive from The Hangar and The Kitchen theaters, it is well worth the experience of tasting some of the best wines the region has to offer and celebrating an American immigrant who made this movement possible.

Heart & Hands

Picture
Heart & Hands decided that enough vineyards in the Finger Lakes Region were making exquisite whites and made it their goal to produce a top-tier red wine. This resulted in their award-winning pinot noir, an elegant, complex wine that put this small winery on the map and is now sold in wine stores across the Northeast. (You'll see this one in New York City, I promise.) Their other wines are incredibly solid as well, so it's well worth a drive up the scenic road along Lake Cayuga and sample everything this picturesque vineyard has to offer.

Barnstormer Winery

Picture
Barnstormers Winery houses itself in- surprise-a 170-year-old barn full of dark wood, homey charm, and a friendly, attentive staff that are happy to see you. Five dollars will get you a taste of five of their wines, and I highly recommend their Nosedive Port (made with 100% Blaufrankisch), their Chardonnay, and their reserve Cab Sauv. They also offer beautifully selected, locally sourced Cheese & Charcuterie plates for $13, so you can grab a long bench in the back room, complete with wild flowers and views of nature all around and snack while enjoying a glass of your favorite from the tasting.

Lakewood Vineyards

Owned and operated by the Stamp family since the 1950's, Lakewood Vineyards has never lost that family feel- you'll feel it from the moment you walk in. This operation looks like a corporate winery at first, but the moment a staff member finds you a spot at the tasting bar and begins to passionately share Lakewood wines with you, you will feel like you want to breath easy and stay awhile. Their Riesling won NY Riesling Winery of the Year at the Berlin International Wine Competition in 2017. For $6 you can choose your tasting experience while also substituting out if there isn't one on the list that you're dying to try. Expand your horizons with their Lemberger (a highly accessible red), their Reserve Cab Franc, their 3Generations Riesling, as well as their gorgeous Port.

Sheldrake Point

On Lake Cayuga, Sheldrake Point Vineyard Tasting Room, is only a 25-minute drive from Ithaca and will be a wine label you’ll see over and over again as a supporter of the arts. Their lovely tasting room is perched on the shore of the lake with a variaty of affordable wine tastings to choose from. Generally speaking, the dryer the better here, but as soon as you sample a wine you like, get a glass, and wander and enjoy the grounds some. It will be summertime heaven.

BREWERIES:

Liquid State Brewery

Picture
Liquid State Brewery got a shout out above but here is it again. This brand spanking new local brewery is located down the street from The Kitchen Theatre and not far from The Hanger, and should become one of your favorites. With absolutely delicious beers like their La Trapeze Belgian-Style Dubbel (a dark brown beer with caramel and plum notes), their Hatchback Double IPA (brewed with mineral salt and coriander), and their Local Vibe No. 2 (made with local white cone hops and local hops to create a citrusy pale ale.) All their beers are made with the upmost care and a fair deal of adventure and creation. I recommend (as ever) a flight so you can sample and find your favorite. Enjoy your beer inside their large, industrial-style indoor space complete with board games and skee ball or outback on their deck where you might be lucky enough to have great food truck available as well.

NATURE:

Picture
"Ithaca is Gorges" has probably become the most popular tourism catch-phrase for the area and for good reason. Located on the cusp of the largest of the Finger Lakes, Lake Cayuga, and just a hop, skip, and a jump from the other Finger Lakes, estuaries, lakes, and gorges litter this area virtually everywhere you look, making the hikes and drives throughout this area magnificently stunning. Soaking up some nature while spending time here is a must.

Cornell Botanic Gardens:

A 24-acre site that features 12 gardens, Cornell Botanic Gardens are a stunning way to enjoy a casual afternoon while working in the beautiful Finger Lakes Region. Used as a large, natural classroom for Cornell agricultural studies, these elegantly manicured and beloved gardens are littered with ponds, foot bridges, benches, and it is an ideal spot for a peaceful stroll by yourself or a scenic location where you can enjoy your lunch.

Cascadilla Gorg Trail

Picture
With 6 waterfalls located along this moderate 1.32 mile hike, the iconic Cascadilla Gorge Trail connects downtown Ithaca with the Cornell Campus. Consistently voted "Ithaca's favorite gorge", this trail was originally constructed in the late 1920's. It ascends over 400 feet, with multiple footbridges taking you over stunning waterfalls. This breathtaking scenery is located along a very leisurely walking trail, ideal for an easy afternoon in nature without a strenuous hike.

Taughannock Falls State Park

Picture
Taughannock Falls State Park is name after the waterfall at the heart of this state Park, and the breathtaking Taughannock Falls plunge an epic 215 feet past rocky cliffs that tower nearly 400 feet above the gorge making it the tallest waterfall east of The Mississippi. Taughannock Falls are 33 feet higher than Niagara Falls but with far less water involved. Enjoy the easy hikes to and from epic views of the falls, and also enjoy the main campsite area right on Lake Cayuga with gorgeous lake views in a relaxing setting.

Buttermilk Falls State Park

Picture
Buttermilk Falls State Park features 5 trails that wander through a variety of landscapes for your outdoor enjoyment. While the gorge trail and rim trail are the most strenuous, they, of course, make you work harder because their views are just spectacular. That being said, the trail that encircles Lake Treman is an easy 1.5 mile loop, but it offers beautiful views of this tranquil lake. Also, located at the base of the falls, there is a small pond that offers a gorgeous summertime dip to those looking to cool off.

Ithaca Falls Trail

Picture
Ithaca Falls Trail is a short 0.2 mile trail that is heavily trafficked due to its proximity to the downtown area. You still get your waterfall, though, as well as beautiful hemlock trees all around. Accessible year-round, you may also bring along your furry friend for this hike even though they must be kept on leash. This is a perfect trail to escape to while working or living in downtown Ithaca.
